How to Make a Corn Sensory Bin

(That Kids and Parents Will Love)

We had no idea a bin full of corn would be the unsung hero of our Spring Event. But there it was—tucked beside the crafts table, quietly stealing the show. It started as a simple idea: fill a couple of bins with whole corn and toss in some farm toys. Low mess, high reward. We figured it’d keep the little ones entertained for a bit while their parents grabbed coffee and wandered the store. What we didn’t expect? Adults elbow-deep in kernels, casually running their fingers through the corn like it was some kind of backyard spa experience.

More than one parent whispered, “This is… weirdly relaxing.” We agree. And now we’re sharing the how-to so you can recreate the magic at home.

Why a Corn Sensory Bin?

Sensory play is exactly what it sounds like hands-on activities that engage the senses. It helps kids explore textures, practice fine motor skills, and even encourages independent play. But here’s the secret: it’s not just good for them. It’s fun.

Corn is the perfect base. It’s less messy than sand, more satisfying than rice, and let’s be honest, it just feels good. It’s also safe for little hands (though, pro tip: not for eating). And as a bonus? You can pick it up right here at Merriam Feed, sold by the pound.

What You’ll Need

Here’s your simple shopping list. No glue sticks or glitter explosions required.

1. A bin

  • Shallow plastic storage bin, under-the-bed size works great. Bonus points if it has a lid for easy storage later

2. Whole corn

  • About 10–15 pounds, depending on bin size

  • Available right here at Merriam Feed (yes, we’re shamelessly plugging ourselves)

3. Farm toys

  • Think tractors, cows, pigs, chickens, scoops, rakes, tiny buckets, fences

  • You can grab a mix from any toy aisle or raid the bottom of your kids’ toy box

4. Scoops & spoons

  • Measuring cups, funnels, ladles—anything to dig, pour, and scoop

5. A designated play area

  • Indoors or out, just throw down a towel or mat for easy cleanup

How to Set It Up

  1. Pour the corn into your bin.
Don’t overthink it. Just fill it deep enough that the toys can be buried a bit and still found.

  2. Add your toys and tools.
Scatter them throughout, or bury a few for a mini treasure hunt.

  3. Set it down in front of your kids and step back.
    Watch the magic happen.

Keep a broom nearby: The corn will escape. It’s part of the experience.

Optional bonus move: add a small bucket on the side and challenge them to "transport the corn" using only spoons. Trust us, it’ll buy you 15 minutes to drink your coffee in peace.

Where to Buy Corn
